This project systematically investigated functional association between the cerebellum and the cerebral cortex, by using our newly developed brain imaging and analysis technologies. We optimized scanning parameters for cerebellum imaging, elaborated and refined data-driven fMRI analysis algorithms, from which we further developed an exploratory group analysis technique and an fMRI signal denoising method. We also collected a large sample of resting-state fMRI, diffusion tensor imaging, and high resolution anatomical imaging data, together with synchronized recording of physiological signals. Most importantly, by employing verb generation and mental writing paradigms, we clearly demonstrated differential roles of subregions within the cerebellum in different phases of learning progress. Furthermore, these subregions were shown to be functionally associated with distinct areas in the frontal lobe and other cerebral cortices.
