Effects of social support on prosocial behavior in adolescents: The multiple mediating effects of basic psychological needs satisfaction and positive emotions
Prosocial behavior is a kind of voluntary behavior that is beneficial to others, social groups or important parts of the society and conforms to the social expectation. It can promote positive social adaptation; enhance individual happiness; form good interpersonal relationship and positive psychosocial adaptability. It is a kind of behavior advocated by the society. Social support, basic psychological needs, and positive emotions have been shown to influence prosocial behavior. Based on the existing studies and theories, this paper discusses the influence of social support on prosocial behavior of adolescents and the mediating effects of basic psychological needs and positive emotions. Using social support rate scale, basic psychological needs scale, positive emotion scale and adolescent prosocial tendency scale, 900 middle school students from Zhejiang province and Yunnan province were sampled by adolescents' self-report. SPSS software was used for descriptive statistics and correlation analysis, structural equation model was constructed and verified, and Bootstrap program in AMOS was used to test the mediating effect. The results showed that (1) Correlation analysis showed that social support was significantly positively correlated with basic psychological needs, positive emotions and prosocial behaviors of adolescents. (2) Establish the structural equation model, and AMOS software for verification, good fitting. The results show that social support can be achieved not only through the mediating effect of positive emotions on the prosocial behaviors of adolescents through the basic psychological needs and positive emotions; but also through the multiple mediating effects of basic psychological needs and positive emotions. (3) The Bootstrap program in AMOS was used to test the mediating effect. The results showed that the total mediating effect was 0.40, accounting for 31.00% of the total effect, and the confidence interval of 95% level was 0.01 ~0.73.Conclusion: social support is the important factors influencing the prosocial behaviors of adolescents, basic psychological needs and positive emotions exist multiple intermediary role in the relationship between the two, can enrich the degree of social support and meet the basic psychological needs and increase of adolescent teenagers positive emotional states and promoting the prosocial behavior.
