Conclusions: To some extent, the unilateral activation of theta and alpha rhythms
during learning and retrieval in MCI subjects supports the idea that bilateral activation
of the left and right hemispheres is a beneficial mechanism during working memory
tasks in the elderly. During the learning period, the energy level of theta rhythm in the
left occipital region is insufficient in MCI population, which may be related to the
deficiency of information maintenance process in MCI population. During the
retrieval period, the energy level difference of alpha rhythm between matched and
nonmatched conditions in the right frontal region of MCI population may be related to
the deficit of attention function in MCI population with working memory impairment.
