其他摘要 | From the perspective of parent-child discrepancies in perceived family functioning, we explored how parent-child family functioning congruence and incongruence affected adolescents' depression, aggressive behavior and delinquent behavior, and further explored the moderating role of child's gender.
Objectives: To explore the effects of parent-child family functioning perception discrepancies on adolescents' depression, aggressive behavior and delinquent behavior. Taking child's gender as the moderator, this paper discussed the different effects of parent- child perception of family functioning on boys/girls.
Methods: Participants: Four primary schools in Qinhuangdao City, Hebei Province China were selected, and fourth and fifth grade students and their parents were invited to participate in the study. 776 Groups of questionnaires were distributed, the final sample included 647 families. Measures: The 6-item General Functioning subscale (GF6+) from the McMaster Family Assessment Device (FAD), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), subscales (aggressive behavior and delinquent behavior) from the Chinese version of Achenbach Youth Self-Report (1991 Version). Analytical Approach: polynomial regression with response surface.
Results: (1) Results showed that when parents and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, child's depression, aggressive behavior and delinquent behavior would decrease significantly, when congruence and low, increased significantly; when parents and child reached incongruence on Family Functioning, adolescents' depression, aggressive behavior and delinquent behavior would increase significantly. (2) When father and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, the level of depression decreased significantly in both boys and girls; when incongruence and child rated family functioning lower than father's, the depression level of girls increased significantly, while for boys, whether lower or higher than father's, the depression level of boys increased significantly. (3) When mother and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, the level of depression decreased significantly in both boys and girls; when incongruence and child rated lower than mother's, the level of depression increased significantly in both boys and girls. (4) When father and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, the level of aggressive behavior of girls decreased significantly, and the impact on boys was not significant; when incongruence and child rated lower than father's, both boys and girls had a significant increase in aggressive behavior. (5) When mother and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, the level of aggressive behavior of boys and girls decreased significantly; when incongruence and child rated family functioning lower than mother's, girls had a significant increase in aggressive behavior, and the impact on boys was not significant. (6) When father and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, the level of delinquent behavior of boys decreased significantly, while for girls, whether consistent and high or consistent and low, the level of delinquent behavior of girls increased significantly; when incongruence and child rated family functioning lower than father's, girls had a significant increase in delinquent behavior, and the impact on boys was not significant. (7) When mother and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, the level of delinquent behavior of boys and girls decreased significantly; when incongruence and child rated family functioning lower than mother's, girls had a significant increase in delinquent
behavior, and the impact on boys was not significant.
Conclusion: (1) When father/mother and child reached congruence on family functioning and high, the levels of adolescents' internalizing/externalizing problems would decrease significantly. (2) When father/mother and child reached incongruence, child's evaluation of family functioning was lower, and adolescents' internalizing/externalizing problems would be higher. (3) Moderating role of child's gender: 1) Different from girls, when father and boy reached incongruence on family functioning, no matter which side was higher, it would lead to the increase of boys' depression level. 2) Father-boy and mother-boy rated family functioning matching had different influence patterns on boys' aggressive behavior. Specifically, the influence of father-boy matching was more reflected in the inconsistency effect. When the family functioning of boy was lower than that of father, boys had more aggressive behavior while the influence of mother-boy matching was more reflected in the consistency effect. When the family functioning of boy and mother were lower, boys had more aggressive behavior. 3) The influence patterns of father/mother-boy and father/mother-girl on delinquent behavior were different. Specifically, for boys, when father/mother and boy reached congruence on family functioning and low, boys had more
delinquent behavior. For girls, when father and girl rated family functioning not only consistent and low, but also consistent and high, the girls' delinquent behavior would also increase. |
