As an important part of people's life, marriage and family are increasingly concerned about their stability and happiness. Marriage is the core of the family, and marital satisfaction not only affects individual and family happiness, but also affects individual performance in other fields, especially in the field of work. At the same time, work is the main way for people to realize self-value and obtain the source of life, and its performance is also directly related to the quality of personal life and family happiness. Therefore, it is of great practical significance to explore the relationship between marital satisfaction and job performance and its influencing mechanism.
This paper focuses on the influence of marital satisfaction on job performance, and explores the mediating role of emotional exhaustion in the relationship between marital satisfaction and job meaning through two studies. In the first study, a cross-sectional questionnaire survey was used to collect and analyze the data of 290 employees. The results showed that: (1) Employees' marital satisfaction had a positive impact on job performance. (2) Emotional exhaustion plays a mediating role in the positive relationship between marital satisfaction and job performance. (3) The moderating effect of job meaning on the relationship between marriage satisfaction and emotional exhaustion is observed, with higher levels of job meaning associated with a weaker positive effect of marriage satisfaction on emotional exhaustion.
In the second study, a longitudinal follow-up was conducted three times within one month, using the traditional cross-lag model to analyze data from 266 employees who had finally recovered. The findings indicated that: (1) Marital satisfaction did not have a significant longitudinal impact on job performance, while emotional exhaustion had a significant negative impact on job performance. (2) Emotional exhaustion plays a limited role in mediating the longitudinal impact of marital satisfaction on job performance. (3) There was no moderating effect on the longitudinal relationship between marital satisfaction and emotional exhaustion, but there was a moderating effect on the longitudinal relationship between emotional exhaustion and job performance. The results of the longitudinal study confirmed the research hypothesis and partially supported the findings of the cross-sectional study; however, there were also some inconsistencies which may be attributed to the short duration of tracking in the longitudinal study or could indicate that although an interaction between marital satisfaction and job performance exists, causation has not been established.
In general, from the perspective of how family affects work, this paper examines the relationship between marital satisfaction and work performance, as well as its influencing mechanism and boundary conditions, which enricfies the theoretical research in the field of work-family, and also provides valuable inspiration and reference for enterprises to pay more attention to the harmony of employees' families in organization and management.
